Seasonal School of Architecture,
Korčula, September/2001.

During September the mayor of Korcula, Mr. Mirko Duhović, welcomed a group of staff and students from the School of architecture at Auckland University, New Zealand. This pioneer school is being established in the walled city for projects to be conceived to enable the city of Korčula status with UNESCO World heritage, similar to Dubrovnik.

Urban and architectural design projects include a "Gateway to Korčula" concept, linking existing towers with pedestrian walkways. Designs for a multi purpose summer theatre will be tested at the Auckland schools acoustic research centre. Detailed measured drawings were undertaken for the design of a multi-media museum at the Marco Polo house. Next year another group of students may be joined with students from the Music School and painters from the School of Fine Arts at Auckland University.

An exhibition of measured drawings, freehand, watercolors and design concepts were displayed and discussed at the end of the visit. A final exhibition is planned at the Auckland Memorial Museum late in October. The 32 students were supervised by academic staff from Auckland University, Srdja Hrisafovic and Kerry Morrow. Students will visit Venice for the Arts Biennial after study in Dubrovnik and Split. Exposure in the national media and many guest lectures by local academics reinforced the value of this new school of Architecture for future cultural exchanges.

This is one of the oldest tool for level measuring (pipe and water ... or better wine, for more accurate results). What if a rose is at the wrong place? Domestic people also helped, especially if a young lady is close. Srdja and Kerry are observing the tower. How to determine where the center of the tower is?   Students were lost but prof. Kerry had a solution. Srdja was exploring every part of the old tower, even a cistern inside the tower build 50 years ago. All impressions were recorded for future analysis. ... as well as discussed among students.
