It stretches parallel with nearby mainland in the west-east direction, 47 km long, its average width is 5-8 km, and it covers an area of 270 km2. The island das a very mild Mediteranean climate, with summer temperature of 28C.
Of all the islands, Korcula is the most visibly redolent with history - from the house in which Marco Polo was born to medieval fortifications erected to keep Turkish invaders and pirates at bay. In the old town, also named Korcula, You can easily find St Mark’s Cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace, in Renaissance - Baroque style, and the town museum, whose impressive collection includes prehistoric finds and stone carvings.
